Christopher Watkin and AI: Stob Lecture 2025

Abstract

We are living, Watkin argues, in AI’s “horseless carriage moment”: a formative window in which our present choices will shape human-technology relations for decades to come. AI presents both opportunities and dangers for Christians. Rather than acknowledging an ever-shrinking human existence that goes beyond AI's capacities or uncritically accepting AI as the savior solving humanity's problems or seeing it as a passing fad, the lecture sketches a path toward a thicker, biblical vision of human dignity, work, and hope. This is done using the Scriptural rubric of Creation, Fall, and Redemption as its context, comparing human realities (properties, relationships) with those of AI/large language models. [A]
