Abstract
This paper critically examines next-generation computing technologies—such as neuromorphic architectures and spiking neural networks (SNNs)—as key enablers in the quest for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). It explores the scientific assumptions underlying these approaches, including the belief that cognition and consciousness emerge solely from physical brain processes, and contrasts this materialistic worldview with a Christian perspective rooted in substance dualism. The discussion highlights the limitations of classical von Neumann architectures, the energy inefficiencies of current AI systems, and the promise of brain-inspired computing to overcome these barriers. While AGI proponents envision transformative societal benefits, including solving global challenges, the paper argues that such optimism often ignores profound ethical and theological questions. Case studies of brain emulation projects underscore the complexity of replicating human intelligence and the unresolved “hard problem” of consciousness. From a Christian standpoint, the mind is not reducible to matter, and human uniqueness—grounded in being created in God’s image—cannot be replicated by machines. The paper calls for proactive engagement by Christian higher education and the Church to shape discourse on AGI, ensuring moral guardrails and promoting stewardship in technological development. Ultimately, while AGI may revolutionize society, it is not humanity’s savior; this role belongs to Christ alone. The paper concludes by urging a balanced approach that integrates faith, ethics, and scientific progress to navigate the cultural and spiritual implications of emerging AI technologies.
