Abstract
Everyone enjoys a good story, and a practicing engineer has a wealth of material to share in the form of a story. Educators are beginning to appreciate the place of stories in engineering education. An engineering capstone senior design project could be designed as a story-building platform. Common story elements arise in the following categories: (1) the background behind the project , (2) the team selection process, (3) the project implementation, (4) follow-up to the project, and (5) personal reflections about the project. Systematic tools for both individual faculty advisors and the engineering program can support the story-building approach. A capstone senior design project can result in meaningful stories for each participant in the project and may provide personalized motivation, ownership, and stewardship well beyond the engineering academic applications.
