Abstract

All Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (EAC-ABET) accredited Engineering programs are required to publicly state their Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) and Student Outcomes (SOs). How closely does the advertising of an engineering program match their PEOs and SOs? Are there differences in advertised themes between Christian and State Universities? Does the advertising of Engineering programs cohere within types of institutions? A key-phrase survey of PEOs and SOs from Christian Coalition of Colleges and Universities (CCCU) institutions having ABET-EAC accredited multidisciplinary engineering programs is compared with web-page advertisements from these same universities. A similar survey is performed for a selected set of state universities. The results for all CCCU institutions are aggregated. For each CCCU institution a nearby state institution is chosen and a similar survey is completed for their undergraduate mechanical engineering major. Results show that for all institutions, the themes advertised are different than themes that appear in PEOs and SOs, especially in the emphasis given to the themes. There also are noticeable differences between the themes that CCCU institutions advertise and those the state universities advertise. Over a hundred small engineering programs at private institutions were discovered. A table of these institutions is included. The main value of this paper is situational awareness which may stimulate program and marketing improvements. Other than the names of and some basic information about the institutions surveyed, only aggregated data appears in this paper.
