Abstract
This paper provides a history of the engineering program at Union University, a Christian liberal arts college, from a feasibility study in the late 1990s to the present. The program has offered since its inception a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE), has been ABET-accredited since 2004, and currently offers concentrations in electrical engineering and mechanical engineering under the BSE framework. The college is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention and is located in Jackson, Tennessee, a city of about 67,000 in an otherwise rural area. This paper will explore the initial and evolving vision for the program and trace the program’s development, particularly with regards to curriculum/programming and enrollment. The paper seeks to begin to answer the question, posed at the 2011 Christian Engineering Education Conference, “Do engineering programs at Christian universities have a history?”
