Abstract

Reprint of 2005 conference paper. Christians believe that humans are meant to live in community; hence building community is part of God’s calling for computer science programs. This will allow colleges to equip students with the interpersonal skills needed for a productive career and to attract and retain students in computer science programs, particularly female, ethnically diverse, and economically disadvantaged students. This paper outlines a philosophy of community-building and gives examples, with data, of strategies and activities employed to build such a community at Westmont College. [WJB]
