Abstract
Contemporary grading and assessment practices tend to focus students and faculty on numbers instead of learning and relationships. Discerning how grading practices and assessment activities shape students hearts appropriately requires a framework for assessing the effects of different practices. The design norms, first proposed by Monsma for evaluating technology, can help us judge the normative nature of particular assessment strategies. Two case studies are presented, along with a reflection on how changes to a course revealed a potential hidden injustice.
