Abstract
In most of the western world today, professional implies secular and Christian engineers tend to dichotomize their lives between laic employment and sacred family and church. At the University of Northwestern, the engineering program mission includes the phrase for God -honoring service to the profession , community, and world . Therefore, graduates must be able to participate in a secular profession and society in such a way that God is honored. This brief paper highlights the life and achievements of Reverend Robert Stirling as a model of excellence for t he integration of faith and engineering. Days after being ordained a Minister of the Church of Scotland, Rev Stirling filed for his first engine patent in 1816 under the title: For Diminishing the Consumption of Fuel, and in Particular an Engine Capable of Being Applied to the Moving Machinery, on a n Entirely New Principle. This innovative work established him and his family as prominent engineers in the areas of mechanics, rail systems, and design in Scotland and beyond . Yet much of Rev Stirling’s day was devoted to the spiritual care of his parish and community, thus exemplifying the life of a prominent Christian engineer.
