Abstract
Based on his book on the topic, the author presents an engaging talk about technology in the 21st century and how it will affect humankind. New problems will be solveable by the advanced technology and the nature of mortality will be changed in a post-biological future. Humans will no longer be the most intelligent creatures on the planet in the age of spiritual machines. Kurzweil discusses how speech recognition (a field he was an innovator in) was developed and how machines achieve knowledge. The rate of progress has followed Moore's Law, which is a special case of a more general evolutionary law governing technological developments via exponential growth, and this will continue based on what we know and will learn from scanning and replicating human brains. Consciousness and emotion and spirituality - the full range of human functionality - will also be achieved by the new machnines we will create, a virtual expansion of our current societal dependence upon machines and technology.
